about

review side-line #38 jan./feb./march 2002: "The East-German city of Karl-Marx-Stadt, prior to this and now again called Chemnitz, with its architecture infested with sleeper city style buildings from the 70s and 80s is the last place I expected musical activity. Yet, Chemnitz is home to virulent Hip Hop, Punk/Hardcore and Techno communities. Lux Nigra sheds light on the burgeoning Breakcore scene and hit on one focal point, Christian Gierden, who is involved in almost every track on this comp. Either by himself, as part of the Society Suckers or as member of yet unnamed new collaborations. Any assignment is impossible due to an inexistant band list, only track titles are available. The only other contributor mentioned in the promo blurb is Geroyche. Their noisy groove smasher is the last jewel in the crown of this recommendable compilation of crushing sound-experimental and rhythmical impact. "Theorie und Praxis" has all ingredients for a dancefloor favourite in the breakcore and industrial scene alike. Stylistically this comp is broad. Ranging from Breakbeat and Gabba to Techno and Breakcore, almost anything (rhythmical) from 1997-2001 is represented. Standard and experiment join in symbiotic union. Heaviness and delicacy, darkness and jollity unite the different tracks. Harpsichord and rhythm box vie for most effect, Asia pop and distortion for most attention. Brilliant. I'd like to know what a Wilhelm-Pieck-Stadt-Guben or Eisenhüttenstadt compilation could unearth. ----TTM: 9"
